With news that Stephen Covey has passed away at the age of 92, we paused for a moment to reflect on his legacy. Professor, entrepreneur, trainer, motivational speaker, and inspiration, Covey is perhaps best know for his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change,” which was first published in 1989, and has gone on to sell more than 25 million copies worldwide since its first publication in 1989. The audio version became the first non-fiction audio-book in U.S. publishing history to sell more than one million copies.

Covey’s 7 Habits form a cornerstone of many of the leadership and management trainings I-TECH has developed, including the Leaders in Health program in Namibia whose materials are archived on this site. In fact, there is a full curriculum module available for each of the seven habits, with links provided here for your convenience:

Covey Habit 1 This 1-hour 45-minute module introduces Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and its sequel, The 8th Habit. It also covers “Habit 1,” which is about being productive and proactive; also discussed are circles of influence and concern, and “emotional bank accounts.” Participants complete self-assessment exercises and plans related to Covey’s “Habits.”

Covey Habit 2 This 2-hour module covers “Habit 2” of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which is about “beginning with the end in mind.” Participants will reflect on their personal core values and how those shape their personal vision and mission, then will use them to draft a personal development plan.

Covey Habit 3 This 2-hour module covers “Habit 3” of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which is about putting “first things first.” Participants will learn about and strategize ways to prioritize and delegate tasks, manage time effectively, and improve efficiency in their own work environments.

Covey Habit 4 This 1-hour 30-minute module covers “Habit 4” of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which is about thinking “win-win.” Participants will learn about “win-win situations” and how to foster them in their work relationships.

Covey Habit 5 This 3-hour 30-minute module covers “Habit 5” of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which is about seeking “first to understand, then be understood.” Participants will learn about the importance of listening, ways to do it, and how it can be a valuable leadership skill.

Covey Habit 6 This 1-hour module covers “Habit 6” of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which is about synergy. Participants will learn about how this concept applies in the workplace and how to foster it.

Covey Habit 7 This 1-hour 15-minute module covers “Habit 7” of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which is about “sharpening the saw”—a metaphor for taking care of oneself. Participants will learn about how work-life balance and self-renewal make for better workers and help them avoid burnout.
